Makin’ Dirt

The hubs and I (well, mostly the hubs) started a compost pile quite a while back. However, the pile was mostly just leaves that we (a.k.a. the hubs) raked and piled, along with plants that I had failed to keep alive, the snippings from dead-heading the rosebushes, and other stray plant matter. But, it was just that…a pile…a boring mound of decomposing yard waste against the back fence. So, with the help of my design and management skills and the upcycling of some discarded pallets (another of my recent obsessions), the hubs created a beautiful home (pictures to follow) for our ever-growing, homemade fertilizer. Now, we could finally start adding kitchen-waste to our composting matter without having to worry about the unsightly view of rotting tomatoes while playing with the kiddos in the backyard! Yay! To help keep the collection of our kitchen waste in check, we purchased a really neat compost pail from Williams-Sonoma ( This makes recycling our fresh kitchen waste super easy, while keeping the smellies contained and making transporting the goods to the compost box a breeze! I can’t wait to reap the benefits of this rich, fertile soil!
