Year of the Challenge

I know it’s been a few days, but I’ve been busy living life, and it’s been fun, even with a sick little kiddo! So, tonight’s post is a little long, but it’s been brewing for a while! ; )

I decided that this year is going to be the year that I challenge myself…in more ways than one. I want to challenge myself to be the best that I can be in every area of my life.

Of course, there’s the health challenge. I know! I know! There’s ALWAYS the health challenge that comes with the New Year’s resolution…the one that lasts a couple weeks, and then we’re back to our old ways! Well, this time, it’s different for me. I haven’t made any “I wanna lost XX pounds.” or “I’m going to exercise every morning at 5:00am.” resolutions. This time, I’m just vowing to eat cleaner when I can and make better choices overall. I’ve been reading various books and blogs and have become a part of some great online groups. I’ve learned a great deal and still have so much more to learn. It’s a work in progress…but isn’t everything that’s really worth anything? And, so, the Paleo 30-Day Challenge continues. We have been doing really great (and I’ve lost 6 pounds along the way). Dear husband has been so wonderful about trying all the new recipes I’ve been experimenting with (and even pretending to like a few), and we have all been eating more fruits and veggies than we ever have! I’d say that’s a great start!

Another challenge that I am working on is our “Waste Less” challenge that I’ve already blogged about a few times. Just a recap, we are trying really hard to be less wasteful in as many areas of our lives as we can. Of course, we have started cloth diapering William. And, I must say, that I am super proud of myself! There were a couple “blow out” diapers that almost caused me to be a Cloth Diaper Dropout, but I stuck them out and am really glad that I did! I’m also proud to say that we used a total of TWO disposable diapers this whole weekend (as opposed to our norm of about 16-20)! Those 2 were for nighttime, which we plan to continue to do. After doing a lot of research and chatting with other moms who are cloth diaper veterans, we have decided this will be the best scenario for our family! Tomorrow afternoon, I will be introducing William’s sitter to the world of cloth diapering! I can’t wait for her to get used to it and see that it is WAY easier than she thinks! I have also started using cloth wipes (which really makes total sense with cloth diapers), so we are wasting MUCH less of the disposable wipes, as well! In addition to those changes, we have started using cloth napkins with our meals and have really cut down on our use of paper towels in the kitchen! We went from buying the mega packs of 16 rolls to only buying 2 rolls a week ago (and we are still on the first roll). We have also drastically reduced the number of Ziplocs that we were using and are using washable containers instead. And, of course, we have started composting and recycling again! (I am even implementing a recycling program at school through our 4-H club, which I co-sponsor! Yay!)

There are several other areas in which I have been and will continue to challenge myself this year, so I will be blogging about those in the future. Some include organization, finances, and even my parenting style. I’ve been reading some great books and blogs in these areas, too, and will share those along the way!

Oh, and speaking of books, I am also participating in the Lafayette Parish Library’s 100 Book Club. (Thank you to my good friend Kim for introducing me to it!) It is a challenge to read 100 books in 2013! So, far, I have only completed 2 books, but I am in the process of reading several others. Join the challenge with me! All you need is a computer and a library card…and some books, of course! Here’s the link if you are interested:

So, I’ll leave you tonight with this quote:

Above all, challenge yourself. You may well surprise yourself at what strengths you have, what you can accomplish.
— Cecile M. Springer

What will you challenge yourself to do this year?

Sweet dreams! ; )

Cool idea about the recycling program at school, let me know what y’all will be recycling and I will try my best to contribute!

Also, if you have any questions about cloth diapers my sister used them also.
